PREVENTATIVE HEALTH CHECKS

DISEASE PREVENTION

How to Detect Conditions Early

TAKE A PREVENTATIVE HEALTH CHECK

Health checks are an important way to prevent diseases. Screening involves testing or checking for conditions in their early stages before symptoms have developed in order to help improve outcomes. If you have any known family history of a certain disease or other risk factors, then regular health checks and screening tests are even more important to help in prevention.

What is a Preventative Health Check?

Preventative Health Check Screening is at your Doctor’s discretion and can involve:

  • tests, eg. cervical cancer screening tests;
  • examinations, eg.skin checks; or
  • advice on self-checks, eg. breast or testicular self-examination.

Healthy Kids Checks for 4 Year Olds

It is recommended for all 4 year old children to visit their GP for a Healthy Kids Check. The purpose of this basic check is to ensure that your child is healthy, fit and ready to learn when they start school. The Healthy Kids Check usually consists of:

  • Your doctor will take your child’s height, weight and BMI and have a discussion about eating habits and physical activity.
  • An eye check is conducted to check for a squint which may cause problems with near and distance vision.
  • Hearing test can be performed at your GP practice.
  • Dental health check up and dental hygiene advice (you may be advised to visit your Dentist).
  • Toilet habits – nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) and constipation are common in kids and effective management prior to entering school years can prevent both parents and children undergoing considerable distress.
  • Checking for known or suspected allergies – advice on how the allergy can be managed in a school environment. Is an anaphylaxis management plan or advice from a specialist necessary? Sometimes food challenges are seen to prior to entering school to minimise restrictions on the child and their peers.
  • Speech and language development.
  • Checking of fine and gross motor skills.
  • Behaviour, mood and sleeping patterns.
  • Emotional maturity.
