SPIROMETRY TEST

Spirometry is a standard test which Westridge Medical Toowoomba use to measure how well your lungs are functioning. The test works by measuring airflow in and out of your lungs.

To take a spirometry test, you sit and breathe into a small machine called a spirometer. This medical device records the amount of air you breathe in and out and the speed of your breath.

Spirometry may help assess lung function and assist your doctor in investigating or monitoring conditions such as:

  • COPD
  • asthma
  • restrictive lung disease (such as interstitial pulmonary fibrosis)
  • other disorders affecting lung function
  • allows the monitoring of chronic lung conditions, Spirometry may also help your doctor monitor a lung condition and assess your response to treatment.

how to prepare for a Spirometry test?

  • Refrain from smoking 1 hour prior to testing
  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours prior to testing
  • Do not eat a large meal within 2 hours of testing
  • Wear loose clothing
  • Refrain from vigorous exercise within 30 minutes of testing
  • Check with Westridge Medical before testing if you take any puffer medications

how is a Spirometry procedure performed?

Spirometry is a non-invasive test that usually takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Some people may temporarily experience coughing, shortness of breath, dizziness or light-headedness during testing. Here’s what happens during a spirometry procedure:

  • You will attach a nose clip and then be asked to breathe through a mouthpiece.
  • Your doctor will coach you to take in as big a breath as possible.
  • Next you will blast the air out as fast as you can until your lungs are completely empty.
  • You may be asked to repeat the test several times to help obtain reliable measurements. You may be given a medication to breathe in. The test will then be repeated to show if your lungs have responded to the medication.

Spirometry is not required for every patient. A GP can assess your symptoms, medical history and individual circumstances to determine whether lung-function testing may be appropriate.
