SPIROMETRY TEST

Spirometry is a standard test which Westridge Medical Toowoomba use to measure how well your lungs are functioning. The test works by measuring airflow in and out of your lungs.

To take a spirometry test, you sit and breathe into a small machine called a spirometer. This medical device records the amount of air you breathe in and out and the speed of your breath.

Spirometry tests are used to diagnose these conditions:

  • COPD
  • asthma
  • restrictive lung disease (such as interstitial pulmonary fibrosis)
  • other disorders affecting lung function
  • allows the monitoring of chronic lung conditions, it is important to check that your current treatment is improving your breathing.

how to prepare for a Spirometry test?

  • Refrain from smoking 1 hour prior to testing
  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours prior to testing
  • Do not eat a large meal within 2 hours of testing
  • Wear loose clothing
  • Refrain from vigorous exercise within 30 minutes of testing
  • Check with Westridge Medical before testing if you take any puffer medications

how is a Spirometry procedure performed?

A spirometry test is painless and usually takes between 10 – 15 minutes and generally happens in your doctor’s office. Here’s what happens during a spirometry procedure:

  • You will attach a nose clip and then be asked to breathe through a mouthpiece.
  • Your doctor will coach you to take in as big a breath as possible.
  • Next you will blast the air out as fast as you can until your lungs are completely empty.
  • You will do the above three times or more to make sure the results are accurate. You may be given a medication to breathe in. The test will then be repeated to show if your lungs have responded to the medication.
