CONTRACEPTIVE IMPLANT SERVICES

Contraceptive Implant Consultations, Insertion and Removal

IMPLANON IMPLANT

Westridge Medical offers consultations relating to contraceptive implants, including insertion and removal services.

A contraceptive implant is a small device inserted under the skin of the upper arm by an appropriately trained health practitioner. It releases a hormone over time to help prevent pregnancy.

Before proceeding, a GP will discuss your medical history, current medicines, contraceptive needs and whether an implant may be suitable for you. Your GP will also explain how the procedure is performed, expected effectiveness, possible changes to bleeding patterns, potential side effects, risks and alternative contraceptive options.

Insertion and Removal

Contraceptive implant insertion and removal are performed using local anaesthetic. Some people may experience discomfort, bruising, tenderness, bleeding, infection or scarring. Other risks and possible complications will be discussed during your consultation.

The implant can be removed by an appropriately trained health practitioner. The recommended replacement timing will depend on the product used and current clinical guidance.

Important Information

A contraceptive implant may not be suitable for everyone. Some medicines and medical conditions may affect suitability or effectiveness. Tell your GP about your health history and all medicines and supplements you take.

Contraceptive implants do not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Condoms may reduce the risk of transmission but do not provide complete protection.
